Every day, security technology helps protect hospitals, transport networks, manufacturing facilities, schools and critical infrastructure. Increasingly, it also helps organisations improve operational efficiency and make better-informed decisions.
Delivering these outcomes requires a diverse range of professionals whose expertise extends beyond what many people traditionally associate with the security industry.
Recent decades have seen a significant evolution in the technologies that underpin physical security. Intelligent network-based cameras, artificial intelligence, edge processing, cloud connectivity and data analytics are helping organisations gain even more value from their security systems.
For those outside the sector, however, this evolution is not always obvious. A student considering a career in technology may naturally think of global technology brands or fast-growing start-ups as those being at the forefront of technology. Perhaps a traditionally physical security company is less likely to feature on that list, even though many of the same skills are now central to our industry’s continued innovation and growth.
That presents an opportunity. By changing perceptions of what a modern career in security looks like, we can help attract people with the skills, curiosity and ambition to shape the next generation.
An industry transformed by technology
This shift in perception reflects a much broader transformation in the technologies that underpin security. The evolution from analogue to network-based cameras, which began in 1996 with the launch of the AXIS NetEye 200, fundamentally changed what security technology can achieve. Cameras became connected devices capable of communicating across networks, integrating with other systems and supporting applications far beyond traditional surveillance.
Today, advances in artificial intelligence and edge computing are accelerating that change. Modern cameras can process information locally, identify patterns, support investigations and provide insights that help organisations make better decisions in real time. Cloud technologies allow systems to be managed across multiple locations, while open platforms enable security solutions to connect with wider business and operational systems.
This means security technology is increasingly becoming part of broader digital transformation strategies. In manufacturing, for example, connected video solutions can help organisations improve processes, enhance workplace safety and gain greater visibility into operations. In transport, intelligent systems can support safer and more efficient environments. In critical infrastructure, technology can help organisations improve resilience and respond more effectively to potential risks.
The role of security technology has expanded because the challenges organisations face have expanded to reflect today’s world. Protecting people and assets remains fundamental, but organisations are also looking for solutions that help them understand their environments, improve operational efficiency and make more informed decisions.
New opportunities for technology professionals
The development of modern security solutions requires new expertise and skills. Software developers are creating applications that make security data more valuable. Cybersecurity specialists are helping protect the increasing number of connected devices. Data experts are exploring how information generated by security technology can provide business insights. Engineers are bringing together hardware, software and networks to create reliable solutions, while professionals in business improvement and operational excellence are helping organisations optimise processes, enhance performance and build stronger customer relationships.
These are skills that are found throughout the wider technology sector. For professionals already working in these areas, our industry offers an opportunity to apply their expertise to practical challenges with visible outcomes. The connection between technology and real-world impact is one of our sector’s biggest strengths.
Changing perceptions of security careers
One of the challenges facing the industry is that perceptions have not always kept pace with this transformation. The term “physical security” can sometimes suggest a traditional sector focused primarily on hardware and protection. While those foundations remain important, the industry today is much broader. Modern security technology sits at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds.
It requires people who understand software, connectivity, artificial intelligence and data, but who also appreciate the environments where those technologies are applied. This creates opportunities for people who may not have followed a traditional route into security.
At Axis, we increasingly recognise the value of transferable skills and potential. Someone does not necessarily need years of experience in the security industry to make a meaningful contribution. The ability to learn, collaborate and apply knowledge in new ways is equally important.
This approach helps widen the talent pool and encourages people from different backgrounds to consider careers within the sector. The next generation of security professionals will come from many different disciplines, bringing new ideas and perspectives that will help shape the future of the industry.
A career in technology with purpose
Career choices are often influenced by more than the technologies involved. People want to understand the purpose behind their work and the difference they can make to the world. Physical security has a direct connection to creating safer environments. The technologies developed by the industry support organisations that protect communities, operate critical infrastructure, deliver essential services and provide safer workplaces.
At Axis, that purpose shapes the way we develop technology, support customers and invest in our people. Engineers develop technologies that help customers solve challenges. A combination of teams and capabilities work together to support organisations in applying solutions effectively. Business functions such as marketing, finance and human resources enable innovation and collaboration across the company. Every role contributes to delivering technology that helps customers create safer, more resilient environments.
For many people entering the workforce today, this combination of innovation and purpose is increasingly important. They want careers where they can continue learning while knowing that their work contributes to something valuable.
Investing in future talent
Creating awareness of these opportunities needs cooperation across the industry. Manufacturers, employers, education providers and training organisations all have an important role to play in developing the next generation of professionals.
This is why Axis recently joined Skills for Security as a Platinum Sponsor, strengthening our commitment to supporting skills development and helping shape the future workforce of the fire and security sector. The partnership reflects a shared ambition to provide future talent with the knowledge, experience and confidence they need to succeed in an increasingly technology-focused industry.
Skills for Security is already seeing encouraging progress. Apprenticeship recruitment across the fire and security sector has grown by more than 20% year on year, while engagement with schools, colleges and employers has helped create a more balanced intake of learners, with approximately half now aged 19 or under.
These developments demonstrate that interest in security careers is growing, particularly when young people are given the opportunity to understand what the industry has become.
Bringing technology into learning environments
A key part of building future talent is ensuring that education reflects the realities of modern industry. Through our partnership with Skills for Security, Axis is supporting practical learning opportunities that allow students to gain experience with current security technologies.
Axis sales engineers have delivered train-the-trainer sessions, helping educators incorporate the latest technologies into their teaching programmes. Hardware donations across UK training centres provide students with hands-on experience using professional security solutions. These activities help bridge the gap between education and employment.
They also help students see beyond traditional perceptions of the industry and understand the variety of careers available, from engineering and software development to technical support, project management and customer solutions.
A sector built on continuous learning
Technology will continue to evolve, and the ability to learn will remain one of the most important skills for professionals entering the sector. Security technology increasingly requires people who can understand the relationship between devices, software, networks and data. As these technologies continue to converge, collaboration between different disciplines will become even more important.
This creates opportunities for long-term career development. Someone starting in engineering may later move into cybersecurity, product development or customer solutions. A software specialist may develop expertise in artificial intelligence applications. A technical professional may progress into leadership roles that combine technology knowledge with business strategy.
The industry offers the chance to grow alongside the technology itself.
Looking ahead
Security has already changed significantly, but the next stage will be shaped by people. The industry needs individuals who are curious, adaptable and excited by the opportunity to apply technology to real-world challenges, as we continue to create a smarter, safer world together.
For those interested in artificial intelligence, software, cybersecurity, data and innovation, physical security offers a career path that combines technical development with meaningful impact. The technology has evolved. Now the opportunity is to ensure more people understand the possibilities that exist within the industry.
Creating a smarter and safer world starts with attracting the people who will build it.
