Sarah Austerberry, CEO of the Security Institute, sets out her vision for the Security Institute for 2026 and beyond.

To me. security has always been about more than systems or protocols – it’s about people. We protect what matters most: lives, livelihoods, and trust. Many in our sector put their lives on the line to protect others on a daily basis. That’s why professionalism and ethics must remain at the very heart of what we do. The Institute will continue to champion the highest standards of conduct, governance, and lifelong learning. Our members will be known not only for their skill, but for their integrity – as trusted professionals who bring calm, clarity, and confidence in a rapidly changing world.

The lines between security incidents have blurred: we see blended attacks using cyber and physical tactics, so our profession must operate confidently across all these realms – bringing together human insight, technological innovation and physical protection.

Through collaboration with industry, academia, and government, the Institute will help define best practice in areas such as AI, hybrid threats, and resilience. Our goal is clear: to ensure our members stay ahead of change, shaping a future where technology supports – never replaces – human judgment and ethical responsibility.

A global and socially responsible profession

Security challenges are global, and our influence must be too. By strengthening our international partnerships, we can share knowledge, harmonise standards, and build resilience that transcends borders.

At the same time, we have a duty to show our value at home – engaging with communities, supporting education, and promoting public trust. The more we share our expertise, the more visible our contribution becomes to society as a whole.

A profession that protects everyone must represent everyone. Diversity and inclusion aren’t just aspirations; they are essential to our strength. The Security Institute will continue to open doors for new voices and perspectives – ensuring that anyone with the passion and commitment to make a difference can do so. From engaging young professionals and supporting veterans and those moving into second careers to welcoming those from allied sectors, we are building a profession that reflects the communities we serve.

A Hub for Development and Leadership

Knowledge remains the foundation of our profession. As new threats and technologies emerge, we must be ready to adapt, evolve, and lead with confidence. Our vision is for the Security Institute to be recognised as a hub for professional development and leadership – championing excellence through collaboration with our partners across education, training, and industry. By working together, we can connect our members with the very best opportunities to learn, grow, and stay ahead of change.

Whether through universities, accredited providers, or sector specialists, we will continue to support access to flexible, high-quality learning that reflects both current needs and future horizons.

At the same time, we will nurture leadership at every level – helping professionals to build the confidence, integrity, and influence needed to guide others through an increasingly complex world.

Ultimately, my vision for 2026 and beyond is about people – our members, our volunteers, and our shared community. The Security Institute’s greatest strength has always been its people: generous with their knowledge, united by purpose, and proud of their profession.

If we continue to learn, to lead, and to look out for one another, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. Security is more than a profession. It’s a calling –  and together, we can ensure that our calling continues to make a lasting, positive difference in the world.
