Security is an increasingly interconnected profession, shaped by the convergence of multiple disciplines, technologies and areas of expertise. Today, security careers can zig, zag and take some wonderfully unexpected turns, spanning physical and corporate security, cybersecurity, AI and emerging technologies, risk, resilience, investigations, governance and compliance.
As a recruiter specialising in security, risk and resilience, I see first-hand just how quickly the profession is evolving and how the best career opportunities do not always follow a straight line. For professionals looking ahead, the challenge is not simply keeping up with change but working out where you want your own career journey to take you next.
Understand where you want your career to go
My advice is to think beyond your next role.
Ask yourself where you would like to be in three to five years and what experience you need to get there. Do you want to develop technically, move into leadership, specialise or influence security strategy?
Explore roles that genuinely interest you, even if you do not initially meet every requirement. Employers can be willing to develop someone with the right attitude, dedication and transferable skills. Sometimes you need to go for the role that feels just out of reach.
While proven skills and experience remain important, I have also seen first-hand the value of looking beyond the CV. During my time as a Director within corporate organisations, I personally recruited into my own teams and divisions, sometimes choosing candidates whose skill set was slightly short on paper but whose attitude, drive and potential stood out. Many proved incredibly successful, bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas to the teams I led.
Build skills that go beyond your job title
The strongest security professionals combine technical expertise with communication, leadership, risk awareness and commercial understanding. Explaining security challenges in business terms and influencing senior stakeholders can be as important as technical knowledge.
Technology is also changing the skills landscape. AI, automation, cloud security and digital transformation are creating new opportunities. My advice is not to chase every shiny new technology, but to understand how developments affect your area of security and where you can add value.
The security role itself is changing too. Organisations increasingly expect security professionals to contribute to resilience, operational continuity and wider business objectives. Technical expertise remains essential, but communication, sound judgement and the ability to influence are becoming equally valuable.
From a recruitment perspective, some of the strongest security professionals are not actively looking for their next role. When they do consider a move, motivations are usually broader than salary alone, including career development, values, leadership and purpose.
Qualifications matter – but experience matters too
Professional qualifications can demonstrate commitment, but they are only one part of a successful security career. Continuous professional development demonstrates investment in yourself, but employers also want to understand how you have applied that knowledge.
Think about the difference between listing risk management as a skill and explaining how you identified a risk, influenced stakeholders and implemented a solution. That is the difference between listing a skill and demonstrating impact.
Make your skills visible
From a recruitment perspective, experienced security professionals can underestimate the importance of explaining their skills and achievements. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for skills, capability and impact, not simply job titles and responsibilities.
Make sure your LinkedIn headline, profile and CV communicate what you can offer. Focus on relevant skills and demonstrate where you have made a difference. For senior professionals, a strong professional bio can also help a hiring manager quickly understand who you are and the value and results you could bring.
Approach your job search strategically
Job hunting requires patience and perseverance. Understand the organisation and what the employer is looking for. Tailor your CV and always prepare examples demonstrating leadership, judgement, problem-solving and proven, delivered results.
If you are considering international opportunities, remember that CV and profile expectations can vary between countries and cultures. Research the requirements for your target market.
Build genuine relationships within the industry. Attend events, engage with professional communities and maintain relationships with specialist recruiters. Strong opportunities often come through professional networks.
Looking ahead
The security profession will continue to evolve as organisations respond to technology, AI, geopolitical uncertainty, regulatory change and increasingly complex risks.
So, my advice is simple: build depth in your specialism, but develop the communication, commercial and leadership skills that allow you to influence beyond it.
The professionals who stand out will be those who can demonstrate meaningful experience, communicate their value, adapt to change and contribute to the wider organisation.
Careers rarely travel in straight lines. They zig, they zag, occasionally they take a wrong turn and sometimes they open a door you did not even know was there. Stay curious, keep learning, keep moving and above all, remember that perseverance is key.
